Where do you stand with a university assignment mark?

If you was a journalist, you would probably loose your job for this since your article would have to fit on a specific page in a specific spot. So think of it as a lesson learnt.0

Well, the reason for going over the word count was that the lecturer said in one of the lessons "I am not encouraging you to go over 3000 words, but I rather you went over the word count and ensure that the valid arguments are listed within the assignment." This on an assignment of 1500-2000 words.
The point I guess I was making was that the assignment was strong enough to pass on the strength of 2/3rds of the report.
However, not if you got additional penalties after the last third had been chopped off.
I think if you read your university handbook, they are quite specific in regard to assignments and word count. When you leave you will meet bosses like me, and if I cannot understand your report from reading the index, I am afraid, the recylce bin is where it will end up.
Though I understand you can add an appendix to your assignment, that calrifies a partiucular point that you make in your main assignment, though this appendix will not be counted towards your word count, if it is not in conext, then it will go against you. For example, in a design I could state that a certain type of resistor is used, and back this up with a data sheet and an assessment in the appendix.
Grow up and lesson learned.
If you cannot understand that, I suggest you start to learn how to fold blankets.0 -

So why did you not re-author it to fit within the word limit imposed ? Why feel the need to include extra ?
Do you not think that, if the university accepted the assignment without any penalty, you would have an unfair advantage over your fellow students.
Limits are there for a reason - you chose to break the rules and have been penalised accordingly.
Lesson learnt.“That old law about 'an eye for an eye' leaves everybody blind. The time is always right to do the right thing.”0 -
My bad. Found out that the overall mark was 50% but only 2/3s of the mark could be gotten and therefore an end result of 32%. Thanks.0

Glad that's sorted!
And good job they don't award marks for "understanding the scoring system" ;-)0 -
marking schem is usually published, for example I use:
31%+ excess the work will be capped at a pass i.e. 40% or
NB. None of the above penalties will be used to change a student mark which is above the pass mark, to one that is below the pass mark. Therefore the maximum penalty for exceeding the word limit will be a reduction to a pass grade.
But different univeristies/ schools / lecturers will differ in approach.
When doing my own degree I asked lecturer if I could go above word count as I felt I could add value to my answer - she agreed - with a strict comment that if it was waffle I would get marked down.... got a 85%
