My mum has just got her first laptop and is finding it a bit daunting at 63 years of age.... I have tried to help today but all the offers and info are a bit confusing....
She has got a Toshiba which comes with Macafee installed for a free trial and she was going to jut sign up for a year. However...
Shealso needs to get broadband connection to add to her BT anytime package fo phone use. BT do an all in package but it is £28 a month... including pc security? She has looked at Plusnet which is a bit cheaper?
BT comes with PC security but is it good enough? She will only be surfing the net / Emails / shopping and maybe MSN / Skype.
I am looking for a simple option for her to be secure and without complications in updating it all herself etc as i know she wont do it...
Best way forward advice please. I am leaning towards the BT package?

Install the free version of avast, and the free version of malwarebytes, uninstall mcafee, and forget about paying for antivirus, and paying extra to BT, they charge enough already - it's supposed to be 13/month and 3 months free atm + standard line rental, assuming light usage
If you have a BT line already, you don't have to go with BT.
create a laptop recovery disk if there isn't one in the box!!

Thanks for the prompt reply.... have been reading the previous posts on this and Avast seem's popular. Will it be easy to use for an OAP who is so new to PC's she just called to ask how to turn it on.... Worried now!!!! :rotfl::rotfl:Bless her... at least she is trying to get with it... :T
I get BT Netprotect free through my job package so dont pay for it... cant get same deal for Mum though.I save so I can spend.0 -
It's as easy as any other AV, install it, register it, it will warn you in 12 months when you will need to register for another 12 months, all free, faster and less bloated than mcafee/netprotect.
You could use remote control software like teamviewer if you want to help her/guide her across the net
£28/month is well overpriced, should be half that!!

avast updates on its own, to do a scan is easy enough, its just open up avast click a button and leave alone until its done
you could use team viewer to do avast scans etc,
i use logmeinfree for helping out,0
