Egg Transaction Times and Process

in Credit cards
Hi Folks
I've recently transferred a balance from my Egg card to a new credit card due to the 0% offer I had running out. Inadvertenly the balance transfer coincided with the date of my regular direct debit payment to egg, which has left my account in credit by £50. I asked for my account to be closed and the credit returned, a simple process I thought considering egg conduct all their business online.
Not so it seems. I've since been told that I can't have the credit refunded before the account is closed, and for the account to be closed I have to wait for a 0 balance to show on my next statement. If I want the credit returned sooner I have to delay closing my account by a month. Is this true or are they just trying to hold onto my money as long as possible??
Help please, much appeciated!!
