Upgrading Windows98?
Comments

Hi travel_freak
I can expand a bit on what Donnie said above about active x.
I think that W98 comes with IE5 which doesn't have active x.
So you must upgrade it to IE6 from here:-http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1e1550cb-5e5d-48f5-b02b-20b602228de6&displaylang=en
The way you described how you did the scan and update sounds about right.
I don't think that those downloads are stored anywhere on your pc, looks like you might have to repeat.
ps This is the correct page to get the updates from, I think:-http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.aspNever interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.0 -
My old lappy has W98 and I have installed BB on it with no problems whatsoever.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0

Hi everyone,
Thanks so much for your time taken in replying to my queries. I've tried the suggestions but still can't get the drivers on in order for the PC to recognise the ethernet card.
Donnie and Bat999 I tried to download IE 6 as you suggested but it said my PC already had that so it seems that's not the problem.
Does anyone else have any thoughts on what the problem might be?
I wonder if there might be a problem with the drivers on the CD Rom that came with the ethernet card. Is it safe/possible to download a driver for this ethernet card directly from a website to see if that solves things?
It's a Maplins ethernet card and on the device manager on my PC it is listed as follows: "Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC".
Thanks again. Fingers crossed I can get this sorted soon as at the moment I have various computer bits littering the living room (as near to the telephone point!) and these are competing with space for Xmas decs!

hi Mr Pig ....
I would suggest to try the card in your other pc to ensure it is working - as the card may be DOA. At least then we know you have a functioning NIC.
Does W98 come with TCP/IP as standard ? Are these the files being requested and skipped. If the NDIS wrapper etc is missing aka slipped during the install it will cause issues?Rich people save then spend.

Travel_Freak, the Realtek downloads page is here
http://www.realtek.com.tw/search/default.aspx?keyword=RTL8139
You should be able to download their driver and try it, if it doesn't work you've still got the one on CD.
Also look at question 5 in the FAQ "Why can't I install my driver properly on win95 or win98?"
http://www.realtek.com.tw/faqs/faqsView.aspx?Langid=1&PFid=4&Level=3
It may help a little. where it says to delete things, personally I would rename to XXXXX.old. Then if it doesn't fix the problem it's easy to revert back to what was there before.
BTW for a non Techie you're doing pretty well! :T
Oh one other idea, if you're not sure what chipset your PC has download Belarc Advisor and run that. It will tell pretty much everything you need to know about your PC (it's freee by the way)

And it's my problem if I have no friends

When you got to the point where it asked for your W98 disk, did you make sure that the CD drive was correctly selected as the path for it to find the files?
I have been caught out with this when installing drivers. Make sure thator whatever your CD drive is labelled as, is selected as the path.
I think you will have to remove the device in the device manager so that you can go through the installation sequence again.Charlie0 -
When you get the driver and card working - here is how to install tcp/ip on W98 - http://www.le.ac.uk/cc/dsss/docs/w95ip.shtmlRich people save then spend.

Many thanks for your post. This sounds interesting and the free bit sounds great! I've never heard of Linux before, can you tell me a bit about it? Is it easy to use? Would I still be able to reload my Word software and other software using Linux as an operating system?
Also, where can you get Linux from for free?
Thanks again.

If your going through linux route you could take computer to a local LUG (Linux User Group) and they will install it for you

sign up mailing list there and they can talk through it with you

Hi all,
Just a quick note to say many thanks to everyone for taking the time to reply. Having followed everyone's suggestions I still haven't succeeded!!! I have no idea what's wrong. I'm tearing my hair out now so think I need to take a break from this before I cause some serious damage to this machine!
Think I'll come at it again with a fresh mind tomorrow. Maybe the card is broken. Think I will try Maplins first thing tomorrow for another as I seem to have exhausted everything else.
Thanks again.
