An old guy tried to drag me down an alley in Paris, in broad daylight in a busy area. I've no idea what he wanted, and don't want to guess. I shouted a French sounding 'Non' lol which caught peoples attention and he let me go.

Am going to Alanya on the 6th June though, and now I'm hoping I won't need a taxi to anywhere!

Jeez...may as well have been the same guy that tried it on with me - similar scenario, except it was night and I wasn't quite as lucky as you...could have been a lot worse, but still...what's worse was that when I arrived back at the hotel (finally!) in tears, my colleagues (the one's who I'd initially got separated from) were sat on the front steps laughing and asking where I'd been. I was not impressed.

Shame that long story is all your memories of Turkey will be dominated by.
We rented a villa in Antalya a few years ago and experienced just the opposite. The villa owner had booked a taxi to pick us up from the airport and to return us when we left. He didn't want paying when he dropped us off, just said he'd be back to take us when we left and we could pay him then. Needless to say, we and our daughters used him as much as possible in the holiday. He would take us to the beach and just say to phone him when we wanted to go home, which we did - and paid him for both journeys upon return. On the one time he wasn't available when we called, his father came for us. They both ran official taxis.
Everyone we met was very friendly and helpful.

We found the same, although there were a few who'd try to rip us off. I found learning a few basics of the language helped a lot, eg good morning, thankyou, "how much" and the numbers (so you can understand the answer!). A very friendly barman taught us some useful phrases as well, including swear words which did work quite well when hassled :)

Hi Cupcakelady, how awful for you, and I know people wont agree with me, my experience of turkey has left a bad taste, my daughter also had a bad experience when she went on holiday, my friend is married to a Turk and visits turkey all the time, and she says the same.
The English, specially the women are treated like krap by most of them, they see us as easy, and take the pi55, you have only to read the horror stories of some of the horrible things that have happened to english women even in thier hotels.

I would suggest you post this on trip advisor, on the Turkey forum, as it will help many people, and make them aware.

16,000,000 foreigners visit Turkey every year.
    Very few have a problem.

My mum's been to Istanbul and thought the city was lovely. Obviously people have different experiences. I went for a massage not too long ago and specifically booked with s.o. who I'd had once before as she had been fab and sweet, but she was terrible last time, with a really bad attitude too. U would never think it was the same woman. We did meet some nice people in Turkey, but when we encountered a problem, things turned sour. I recommend people to be prepared before they go - with booking cabs, money, saving important numbers etc as i posted previously. I was taken aback by the attitude of the security personnel and policeman. I don't think it's a problem exclusive to Turkey, I think similar/worse things happen in lots of countries.

For the people who had bad experiences in Paris etc., I am sorry to hear that. I hope all of us will have happier and safer travels in the future!

wow, that was a very long story

My point is slightly different to the other reponses on here but its reallt that "once bitten twice shy"

It seems the taxi driver you used the first time took more money than was agreed.....yet you booked him again?????????? not in a million years would I have taken his number to book him again!
