BT Master Socket - Only 1?

Hi everyone

I had 2 socketes when i moved in.

One was in the hallway with leads look like going outside the other in the bedroom again going outside.

Now taking the boxes off the bedroom has a telephone socket behind it the other does not.

So is the one in a hallway an extension from the bedroom one and just the cables are buried in the wall? (My gut feeling is yes)

We renovatong at the moment and replacing all skirtings, replastering etc so the hall one does need to be moved as its caked on in paint to the skirting board.

No man can serve two masters - just like BT sockets.

I have only ever had one BT-installed socket and the inside of it looks like your bedroom one so would take a guess that it is indeed the master.

So the one in the hall is an extension? And can move it?

You can indeed but in these days of wireless phones I'd remove any extensions and just use the primary socket only. You'll get a better broadband connection too due to less interference on the line.

Where's the white cable go to?

the white cable is 2 extensions i put in for sky box (need it for multiroom) and my pc. But both of these are now moving.

Thanks, skirting now can be moved
  • If you want to improve the stability of your set up then only use the numbered wires in 2 and 5. The third, number 3 is the bell ringer. This was used in the olden days to make the phone ring but is seldom used anymore (bt engineers also used to connect number 4- not used at all).

Wires 3 and 4 can lead to interference on the line so just disconnect them.

The following explains the problem in more detail

BTW when buying new cable avoid the multi-stranded stuff (as sold at toolstation), go for the solid core, otherwise you will find that it works itself loose in the socket.
  • The Bedroom one is your master socket. Your hallway one is connected to the bedroom one which if you are not going to use I would consider removing fully to prevent any kind of interference.
