talktalk cancellation

hi everyone
i think i know what the answer will be but looking for a bit of advice anyway. basically we're with talktalk for phone and broadband and pay around £50 a month. I know this is really expensive but aren't in an LLU area.
ive just mentioned on another thread that my husband and i are living in england at the moment but our landlady needs this house back next month as shes getting made redundant. as we'd need a lot of money to pay for another deposit etc we've decided to cut our losses and return to scotland where our friends and family are. we have a relative's place thats empty at the moment giving us the ideal opportunity to live there until we find work etc.
as neither of us will be working initually when we move money will be tight. ive given talktalk a phone and asked how much it would be to transfer our services. they told me it'll still be £50 a month which is really surprising and not something we will be able to afford.
ive looked online at the cancellation policy and it seems to be £8 per month left of the contract so we'd be looking at around £90.
I have thought of just cancelling the direct debit but i think that would be foolish as im pretty sure its not difficult for companies to track down people that owe them money.
i have seen someone on a forum ask the company for proof of the contract they signed and when they said it was verbal then nothing could be proven. im not sure how viable an option this is.
any help about cancelling this service. would be appreciated although i think i'll just have to pay the cancellation fee although we cant really afford it.

A verbal contract is just as binding as any other, you've clearly accepted the terms by using the service.
Cancelling the DD wil just result in them trashing your credit record.
Realy no alternative but to pay the ETC or transfer the service and continue.
How are you managing to pay as much as £50pm even in a non-LLU area-it should be around £35 depending on phone tariff? No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
yeah i thought as much, we're going to phone them later regarding cancellation fees, not worth any risk on our credit rating. i have no idea to be honest why its that expensive, we shopped around before we moved and they were all pretty expensive
saying that a guy came to our door about a month ago saying that our area may not fall under LLU any longer, so he took some details from us and said that someone from talk talk would be in touch to verify our information. he didnt promise it would become LLU but said our part of the exchange maybe. i phoned TT a couple of weeks later who didnt seem to know anything about this and said that it may happen in the future so that was slightly confusing and frustrating. seems to be the case with them that noone knows what anyone else is doing.....0 -

Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

There is no LLU at your exchange but, with just over 2000 residential homes, that's not unusual (difficult to make a business case, I'd imagine).
I'd say the cold caller was giving you BS - wriggling in case you'd originally been sold TT on the basis that LLU was "coming to your exchange shortly" (a common cold call tactic, I am sure). Your follow-up call resulting in "dunno" probably confirms that.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. hmm thats annoying! especially cos he had a talk talk id badge on. thing is he said he was only on commission so he would have soemthing to gain from signing us up if we could get onto the non-LLU exchange, doesnt make much sense but yeah I've gotta agree with you....0
