Closest school or best school

That was a big factor in sending mine to the Catholic school, as the Catholic secondary school is one of the better schools in the area.
At the top of North Road Durham?
There is trouble brewing now due to the transport arrangments, my son is only part time their so he's safe with that and because we decided when he got to nine that we would drive him to secondary school everyday but its a big undertaking for five years, especially when there are no direct buses but it was the best for my son both then and now.0 -
Yes - we've had letters about that. There's no direct buses from here to school, so if they get rid of the school bus I'll have to pay for bus passes and they'll have to change buses on the way.
They are also wanting to up the limit for free school transport from 2 miles to 3 miles. Our nearest secondary school is 2.8 miles away, so I'd have to pay bus fares or petrol costs to send them to any of the schools if that comes in.Here I go again on my own....0 -

Has it been decided yet?
The church met the LA at county hall a month or so ago and they were claiming religious discrimination if they went thorough with the planned changed.
My son is 3/4 catholic and 3 out of 4 of his grandparents when to St Leonards along and one parent and 90% of the rest of out families also attended this school, he was baptised at an ecumenical service because our families are not all catholic and we were told he could get into St Leonards on religious grounds but he chose to attend an arts colledge instead and we provide the transport for him.
Its very steep what the council want to charge you for you kids to go to that school yet they transport my son by taxi to it and New colledge and twice a week they drop him at home by taxi despite us telling them that its not needed, the LA are wasting money on some school transport yet charge some parents a small fortune just to get your kids to school.0 -
I think it's still open for people to lodge objections until sometime later this month.
Then it all has to go through the consultation process which will take many months before a final decision is made.
I've got a younger one who's at the feeder primary school. There's already people talking about what will happen when their children grow older, including people who say they won't be able to afford bus fares. That goes back to the argument that people who can pay get the best choice. Someone told me it's about £15 a week for a childs bus pass, but I've not checked out the full details of that. Here I go again on my own....0 -

It will go through, the super council is corrupt and should never have been created since we had it once before and it was disbanded for that reason.
I have been to some of the meetings and they do what they want depending on whos paying them, if someone is turned down for planning permission by the secreraty of state after a public enquiry it beggers belief that a couple of weeks after the super council came into being they get full permision for a scheme twice the size of the one turned down.
It will always be the more well off that get all the choices, I know that before we decided to send our son to the school he wanted to go to we had to think long and hard about wether we could commit to doing the school run for at least five years and we couldnt just change our minds as there is no bus service available.
looby has to pay for her daughter to get to the Johnston and shes paying @£300 per year now iirc and they want to double it in the same bill as removing free bus travel to religious schools, £600 pa is a hell of a lot to pay to get your kid to school every year and I dont know how people can afford to pay it especially when they have several children.0 -
Kids will play with other kids in the street no matter what school they go to.
We moved to be next to a decent school, and lo and behold there is only one kid our DD's age living in the street and she's a bit of a tearaway so never destined to be DD's BFF:rotfl:
The school has been great, it's a lovely area we stay in, and now DD is older she can walk a bit further afield to visit her friends, or we can drop her off.Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19
