Backcharging On Gas

We moved into our new student house in Summer 2010 and switched the gas supplier from Southern Electric to NPower.
We received a confirmation letter from Npower stating that we were with them for gas (and electricity).
We began receiving bills for electricity online.
Due to some strange internal fault to do with the meter being registered to a similar but non-existent address, we did not receive bills for gas. It turns out that NPower hadn't properly communicated that we were transferring to them to Southern Electric and consequently they we were stuck in a bit of a deadlock.
They finally cottoned on this week and have asked for the unpaid money for the unbilled months to be paid back via a payment plan.
Can they do this? We made every attempt to remedy the situation at the time and have records of calls we made to customer support centres. We have a confirmation letter of leaving Southern electric and joining Npower. The mistake is theirs and now we're being backcharged for a LOT of money for students.:money:

Any valid reason you think you should not pay for the energy you have consumed?
If you don't think you should pay, who do you think should?"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
They made a mistake which they are now rectifying.
Had they made a mistake and over-charged you, would you not expect a refund?0 -
I would say over the winter you probably got a better deal with Southern. Ask them to spread out the cost for you with a payment plan although you should have the money put aside.Self Employed, Running my Dream Jobs0
