Tax credits couple to single

I have just split from my partner and will be moving to my parents. At the moment my wife doesnt work and i get child tax creds and working. As the hours worked and income have not changed as my wife didnt work, the calculator says credits will remain the same and my parents income not assessed.

Can anyone confirm ?

Are the children with you or with your wife?

Assuming the kids live with the mother and not you, you will not be entitled to claim CTC. Depending on your wages IIRC it's near £12,000 mark this year as a single person if you earn under that you may be eligible to claim some working tax credits, your parents income is not counted towards your claim.

You need to make sure then that the child benefit is also being paid to you - as if being paid to the mother, then this will enable her to put in claim for child tax credits, child maintenance etc. You should also discuss child maintenance/support with the mother, as no doubt, she will want to also contribute to the future upbringing of the child, particularly once she finds employment.

Ensure you cancel the joint claim and start a new claim as a single parent.

Despite you claiming the tax credits you do need to inform them of the change in circumstances to avoid an overpayment.
Forums can be/are a good guide to entitlement and it is good practice to back it up with clarification from the relevant department/specialist with written confirmation to safeguard yourself.
