Smell from outside inspection drain

Hi
I've noticed a horrible smell that seems to be coming from the outside drain (where the inspection cover is).
If I lift the inspection cover...what's my next move??
Is there any drain cleaner that I can pour down to move any blockages??...or would I go in with a stick??!!..

Very ignorant about what to do and obviously, want to avoid calling in Dynorod, if at all possible

THANKS ALL

lift the cover first. if its blocked then go and buy a set of drain rods.
very good investment and will save you a small fortune.

about 20/25 quid ish from wickes etc...

    Ok...thanks!
How do drain rods work....(hope they come with idiot-proof instructions). Is it a case of giving each pipe a good prodding with the rods??

    Thanks again

yes they screw together, as many rods as you need.
just remember to turn them clockwise as you prod, never the other way.
otherwise there is a danger of unscrewing them and leaving some rods inside the drain.

that will cost a fortune to recover.

    ps
    buy some working gloves too!
    Get some gorm.

    Thanks for that!
Can I just check...inside the inspection drain are 3 inlet pipes.
there is also black water/sludge sitting just below openings to these pipes. Does this sound normal??

As Ormus has said, rods are the way to go and will fix nine out of ten problems you may have - it's just a very unpleasant job to have to do.

Is it normal? Erm, yes, entirely. If the sludge/water was above the level of the pipes, that would mean they were blocked and the rods were needed. Which makes me think the drains aren't blocked at all and, instead, something's stuck down there, is rotting away but, thankfully, is not stopping the "flow".

I'd still get some rods, mind, and give the drains a good stuffing to try and clear what may be stuck/rotting.

    yes..will def get rods!

I'm wondering if there is a blockage nearer to the loo inside the house, as, when it's flushed, I've now noticed a lot of gurgling and the water rising higher in the bowl for a couple of seconds (just to frighten me!!), before it thankfully recedes to it's usual position.

Thanks so much for your thoughts and ideas. I love MSE!

Have you got a policy with anyone? i've got one with Northumbria water, and when my drain blocked a nice man came out and cleared it, it was about a cm from the top.... if you do it yourself, wear a mask, and goggles. And old clothes, and gloves.

    and goggles.

I'd go with that too. H got a face-full last week :rotfl:, just before he decided the money for the drain man was well worth it after all!
