A headphone/laptop/web issue

Hi guys, I have a good one for you - cause its got me totally confused.
Ever since I got my nokia phone (5530) I've used the supplied headphones for all my audio needs, I'm not a big music listener or anything and they were better than anything else I had lying about, I've never had any problems.
Until Dell sent me this replacement laptop (N1050). Now anything I play locally using the headphones is fine.
Any web material I play is quite, distorted and crackily.
This is not browser specific - but it is machine specific I have no problems on my other computer.
And although I only have other cheap headphones lying around, none of them seem to have this problem, the same goes for plugging in speakers.
And here's the killer - My sister has the exact same phone, I tried her earphones the exact same problem.
Any suggestions, cause well I just really don't understand.

I think this can probably be ignored, I don't really understand, but it seems the inbuilt microphone on the headphones is causing problems and they work fine the the button is pressed ( hardly practical)
But this doesn't seem to be a problem in audio sockets dedicated to headphones, only a general line-out port ( or the combination as is now common on laptops)
At least now I know if I go and buy a semi-decent pair of headphones though there is no chance they shouldn't work.0
