There will, undoubtedly, be direct transfers from Faro Airport to Albufeira - as this is one of the busiest resorts on the Algarve. However, the cheapest and most interesting way to reach the resort would be by train...
There is a frequent public bus service from Faro Airport to Faro town (every 30 mins or so, depending on time of day - costs €1; EVA bus 14 or 16, takes 20 mins) - a nice little town which is slightly less touristy than Albufeira. It drops you off at the train station, where there are plenty of cafes to have a coffee and custard tart while waiting for the train.
The trains themselves are more or less hourly (for the full timetable go here http://www.cp.pt/cp/displayPage.do?vgnextoid=a4f6f9e12a584010VgnVCM1000007b01a8c0RCRD and click 'Regional and Inter Regional Services' then 'Lagos/Vila Real/etc.'), and take you along the coast - sometimes almost touching the sea. They stop along the way at four or five little halts and give a good glimpse of what the Algarve has to offer away from the big resorts. The journey from Faro town to Albufeira takes 30 mins, and costs a few euros (sorry - can't get the exact fare).
Portuguese trains are clean and easy to use. If you find you like the look of the Algarve outside of Albufeira I highly recommend the town of Tavira - about 40 mins the other side of Faro to Albufeira. Its a pretty little town with plenty of good tavernas, and an island beach on a sandback a wee ferry-ride off the coast. Would make a great day-trip.
Hope you enjoy the break.0 -
Thanks for all the tips we will probably use travel republic for the transfers but the train sounds ideal for a look around as it sounds really nice0

Getting the train would mean you would have to head into Faro and then get the train to Ferreiras which is another 15 mins car ride to Albufeira.0

There is a station at Albufeira.0

There is a bus station but no train station. The train station for Albufeira is Ferreiras and it is several miles away from Albufeira itself.0

We used resort hoppa in Jan when we went. They were reliable and take you to the hotel door. We booked on the internet price was ok and at least you know it's booked rather than messing about trying to find something when you get there.
