hiya need to get a new van for my husband. Hoping to get something that will be a bit better with the petrol as spending a fortune. Also something with lower road tax would be a bonus! only thing is it has to have 3 seats. can anyone recommend anything? thanks

The new Master/Movano thing is a nice van, available in many different specs, much nicer than the old one which was a bit on the cramp side with three seats.

The new Sprinter is a nice van aswell, with a much improved driving position and lots of room in the car.

You can get both in Euro5 but as far as fuel economy goes I have only driven a Master about 2 miles and the Sprinters are Ambulances so the figures are not relevant as we drive loaded all the time and we have automatics.

The 2.2 engine in the Sprinter is more powerful than you may think, 160bhp I think, but we have had 3 or 4 go up in flames, but I think that was due to a production fault as they were all 59 plates made the same month, none of the others have gone up, we have them from 58 to 60 plate.

I would avoid the newer autobox it isn't the same box as fitted to the previous generation Sprinter, we have had them go bang within a year!

    Depends on how big?

Dispatch/Expert used to come with 3 seats... Not sure about newer ones probably still do HDI motor for simple servicing/fixing and decent MPG.... Probably come with the 1.6hdi motor nowadays?... = lower tax?... Although dont quote me.

Size after that you'd be looking at Vivaros/Transporters/ Traffics/Vito... After that your into the bigger vans of Sprinters/Movanos etc...

I personally dont rate Transits anymore... Sprinters depending what you want them for Gross out before you Bulk out due to being far too heavy.....

Not sure what size of van your looking for but the smallest van i know of with 3 seats is the new 3 seater berlingo, should be better on fuel and maybe road tax, also how about a deisel instead of petrol as you usualy get more mpg with deisel.

There is also the VW transporter averaging about 36 mpg, but without knowing how big a van your looking for its hard to suggest some.

What are you carrying, what type of journeys will you be doing and what weight do you need.

VED is the same (£130.00) for all Euro IV + V LCVs registered after 1st March 2003. More if registered before then.

As much as I love the Berlingo, the three seater is not really a three seater. It is a two seater, with a funny bit of upholstery in the middle.

Personally, my favourites are the Trafic/Vivaro/Primastar and the Dispatch.

I know wha you mean about the berlingo, it is a bit cramped and would be ok as an ocasional seat but not for any real long journeys, ive only driven the Vivaro out of the 3 above, i know they are much the same, the vivaro was quite nippy. I drive a transit for work and i find this annoying when 3 people are in the front as the middle passeneger always seem to lean on the drivers arm rest and gets annoying, also the passanger double seat is a bit straight and can cause a sore back on long journeys but the drivers is rather comfy.

OP what is the spec of the van you are looking for?

Anything smaller than a Vivaro will be too cramped for three seats in the front, even if they are fitted. Is he VAT registered?

In which case he might want to consider a crew van/combi. Perhaps a Dispatch combi/crew van. Or even a Berlingo Multispace, with the seats folded down, it is almost as big as the Berlingo van. This will have the advantage of lower VED, I.E., Band E £110.
