What sort of document do you want to convert to PDF?

OpenOffice allows you to save its documents (basically word/ excel/ powerpoint etc) to PDF format and is free.

Alternatively you can get a PDF "Printer" which has the benefit of allowing you to create a PDF from any program at all. I used a free trial of one of these from http://www.download.com/3120-20_4-0.html?tg=dl-20&qt=PDF%20printer&tag=srch (cant remember which one it was) and it was very good but as a free trial it added an additional page to the end of the converted document with a footer saying "created by.... get at http://...." wasnt a problem for what I wanted it for but may not be appropriate for some uses

I have tried several of these freebie PDF writers and the one I like is called PDF Creator. It does not bother you with any advertising straplines or splash screens. Highly recommended.

another vote for pdf 995 - I have it installed on my work machine - works just like the writer from adobe IMHO except it's free and there is a small advert after every print

Try cute pdf writer I use it at work, easy to use free download. There are two files to download but straight forward to install. No nag screens or pop ups.

Have been using that for 2 years now. I would second that ;) a professional application that is easy to use and is FREE.
  • I've tried downloading a pdf writer to my laptop, but for some reason it would download the printer drivers and I keep getting error messages to tell me this. I've tried it with cute, pdf creator and even the adobe free 30 day trial. It's really annoying because I would like a pdf writer.

    Any suggestions?

Are you logged in with administrator privileges? If not it may be an issue installing a new printer driver without sufficient permissions to do so.
