Problems trying to burn disc with Burning studio 6

Hi, I'm trying to burn photos and video to a DVD using Ashampoo Burning Studio 6. I have tried several times using a DVD-R and I keep getting a message,
Failed to write to device.
I did a software update but get the same message.
Any advice most welcomed.

PS, I downloaded CDBurnerXP and got the same error message, suggesting faulty discs. Brand new DVD's by Verbatim
