3D TVs

Do you need a TV that specifically states it's 3D? Or is it all about the HZ?
From what I understand, 3D just displays the picture twice; only slightly different (for that 3D effect).
Or is it a lot more complicated than that?

It needs to be specifically capable of 3D. Its partially about Hz, but that doesnt mean a 400Hz tv (for example) would be capable of showing 3D images
Yes, 3D tvs tend to flick between one image and another to give the effect
Personally, ive no interest in 3D until decent 3D tvs exist that dont require glasses or a 'sweet spot' to sit in:idea:0 -
hi you need a 3d tv passive or active 3d they both switch from 3d to hd. One the glasses are much dearer but tv cheaper and have quick shutter 3d. The other is really cheap glasses like cinema but tv more expensive and not full hd 1080p.
Went to buy one today with the sony tv cashback part exchange offer they have but when i got to check out wanted to charge £50 for me to collect from store  . T@C of the offer is to pay £50 to drop your part exchange at the store and pick up new TV guess what will not be buying from Sony.0 -
So what does a 3D TV (and players, for that point) do other than quickly alternating slightly different images? Is it more about how 3D glasses separate the images?
I'm not considering a 3D telly at the minute, I'm just curious.The View Belongs To Everyone0 -
Passive 3d is like the cinema images overlap benefit of passive TV is it works with cheap paper/plastic glasses so for families is great, but not 1080p so not as detailed background. Active is £80 glasses that have battery operated liquid shutters that open and close and is better 3d image but costly for all the famiy and friends to watch a film.
ps not qualified but just how it was explained to me.0 -

That's pretty much my understanding of it. Just wondered why non-3D TVs and players don't output/display 3D images if they're fast enough to do so.The View Belongs To Everyone0 -

its just how it projects the images
i dont actually see the gimmick with it, if going by the films in 3d at the cinema is anything to go by i wont be buying a 3d tv as it will hurt my eyes,
im not an expert either, its just what ive read/heard0 -
I went to see Rio 3D yesterday and it was an OK 3D effect. When I was young (probably about 20+ years ago), I saw a 3D film (it was more clips of horses and surfers and stuff) and the picture seemed literally inches away and made me flinch. Was that because I was closer to the screen or are 3D films not made that way these days (or at least Rio)? The View Belongs To Everyone0

Still can not get over Sony giving me £200 for my old tv on £1000 new one then wanting me to pay £50 for me to take the old tv to the store and pick up a new one. Thought was a mistake and that was delivered but no T@C state £50 collection fee. I am just gutted as will not pay out of principle.0

That does sound ridiculous. Is it not worth selling your old TV to put towards the price of a new one?The View Belongs To Everyone0

Milky joe have been told your eyes have alot to do with it. If you have one eye even slightly weaker the image does not jump out at us as much.0
