I went in 2001, flew in to Bangkok, and did the over night train to Phuket, it was great! I cant remember how much it cost, but it was great fun, loved it!
Did Bangkok,Phuket, Krabi, and Kho Phi Phi ...........which was just stunning, I dont know how it is post Tsunami? Then Pattaya (omg....vile place!) and back to Bangkok. Loved every minute of it, was only for 3 weeks but had the time of our lives.

    Have a great time!

I was in Phi Phi last year (for a few hours as part of a boat tour, I wish I had stopped overnight). Apart from a commemorative sign you really wouldn't have known that it had been devastated by the tsunami. It really is a fantastic place. A little piece of paradise.

Phuket is a sh!th@le full of frat-boy yanks and Russian gangsters - the beach is a toilet and everything is expensive.
    Avoid it like the plague.

I would agree to some extent that Patong can be described as above - however - if someone has stayed in one of the many 50 bob a night doss houses, it is also likely that one will be more likely to bump into the more undesirable elements that frequent the island.

There are more desirable places to stay other than Patong.

i live in uk , and phuket and koh samui are dirt cheap - hotels petrol food clothes anything you want .

The point is that Phuket and Samui are much cheaper than the UK for most things - but they are expensive compared to the rest of Thailand.

Phuket is getting to be the main rip-off area of Thailand. Wife went in November last year, as son has lived there for over 6 years, plus we have made many trips over the 20 odd years.
The north is still as remembered from our early years of the south. Chiang Rai better than Chiang Mai.
We found Vietnam and Cambodia now to be much better options.
Links to a couple of Phuket newspapers, so you can see how the area is going.
