Out of date cat food?

Would out of date cat food cause any problems???

I've just bought a large bag Hill's Natures Best (dry) from Pets at Home for our cats, put their lunch out, and thought 'hmm, this looks a bit odd...'. The pellets were slightly more 'sticky' than usual. Being dozy, i put it out anyway and the cats ate most of it :).

Then I checked the date as I put the bag away, and it's 5 months out of date!

I'm figuring that our cats generally have cast iron stomachs so will probably be fine, but it's still worrying me :-/

Of course, I'll be going to back to Pets at home and making my feelings known :(.

If you have just bought it i'd be taking it back unless you got it on yellow stickered prices.

It'll be fine for the cats but they may go off it in a week or two now it's opened.

  • I just bought it today, off the regular cat food shelf. And it there were plenty of other bags of the same food there too :-/. I'll definitely be returning this bag to them!!! I'm not impressed!

I don't think the food will be harmful to your pets but the nutritional value will probably be lower as vitamins etc start to degrade after a time!
  • Well, the food has been returned to the store, who were extremely sorry and replaced it with more food than we bought, plus a 50% refund. And the cats are curled up fast asleep, non-the-wiser! So all's well that ends well :)

I'll be checking 'best before' dates from now on though!

You wouldn't expect that in Pets at Home maybe in a smaller independent Pet shop but you would think that PAH their stock turnover would be so quick that it wouldn't happen!
