Understanding Laptop Ram

Hi a question I have a Lenovo B550 Laptop, i have been looking at Ram as it has 4GB and it holds up to 8GB. I went to crucial.com site to find out what Ram and it came back as:-

DDR3 PC3-8500,
DDR3 PC3-10600
  • My first question is, is one of these Modules better.
I have been looking for the best deals on Ram but i am looking at adverts and i am not understanding this:-
  • Second and final question,Each memory slot can hold DDR3 PC3-8500, DDR3 PC3-10600 with a maximum of 4GB per slot.*
DDR3 PC3-8500 1066 MHz Laptop Memory is it compatable for my 10600

Thanks

The PC3-10600 is faster than the PC3-8500. The 8500 in the chip name is an identifier to say it runs at 1066MHz. If you have PC3-10600 RAM in and you install a 8500 stick without removing the 10600 stick, the 10600 stick will run at the slower speed of the 8500.

If your operating system is 32bit, then you are wasting your money - it won't make any difference, and Windows won't even see it (probably won't even see all of the 4GB you have already). You need a 64bit OS to make use of it - which you may have, but check first.

Hit the Windows key and Pause/Break key together and it'll bring up a windows which will show whether you've got 32 or 64 bit.

It will also tell you your currently installed ram (seen to Windows), which for 4GB on a 32bit OS will be around 3.0 to 3.5GB

Even if its 64bit - Id be suprised if you could tell any difference using 8GB (Unless you run extremely memory intensive programs)

Especially on a lappy which people tend to run in lower power modes

What program(s) are you planning to run on a laptop that will require 8GB of RAM?
Sounds like complete overkill, unless you are doing video editing, intensive Photoshop work etc.

Not a techie person and not going to run anything major but i was thinking Windows 7 uses more ram than my old XP so i thought that the 4GB would soon slow down.

Thanks for your advice all much appreciated
