I have been using my BT phone line for a few weeks now and for the last 1 and a half weeks, theres been no dial tone on my phone. i had sky plus put in about 2 weeks ago but pretty sure phone was working ok after that.
Now my broadband has been activated and of course, the modem cant find a dial tone. i called virgin and they said it's a BT problem and BT did a few line tests and they said it's fine.
If they get an engineer round and it's a problem inside the flat, they'll charge me about £75.00.
Any ideas on what it could be??
regards

Unplug the skybox - does it make a difference?
Can you dial-out to make a telephone call?
And broadband doesn't need a dialtone to work.0 -

no difference, do i need a filter on the sky plus?

when i pick up the phone, there's no dial tone so cant make a call
And broadband doesn't need a dialtone to work.
my set up is
double phone socket - sky plus in one
the second has a filter in it with phone in one and adsl cable from other to modem then modem to laptop0 -
The filter should go into the main socket and then you plug the adsl into the adsl socket on the filter and use a splitter for the sky and phone. All other phone extensions also need a filter if they have something plugged into them.
Unplug everything from all phone sockets and start from scratch. Start with the BT master socket (the one where the cable comes in from outside) and just plug a phone in and see if you get a tone. I would also try a different phone.0 -

I did all this last night and still no joy. i live in a ground floor flat and as far as i can see, i only have 2 phone sockets, one in the living room (double) and one in the bedroom (single), i've tried both and still no luck.
haven't managed to try a different phone yet but would this mean if i get no dial tone with a corded phone, it's an external problem with the line, or could it be internal wiring??0 -
It's hard to say where the problem is but here's a link to BT faults page. There is a list of things you can try if you follow the "troubleshoot" link.0

Im slightly confused my your last post, you have 2 sockets 1 double and a single? I make that 3 sockets
normally each socket requires a filter especially if the sockets were installed by BT as the cable to the extention will come out of the back of the socket. most self installed come out of the front of the socket and have a standard plug on it. you need to work it out how you connected.
As said before no dial tone is required for broadband/adsl but no dial tone can mean there is a problem with the line so your adsl wont work.
Unplug everything except the phone in to the main socket see if you get a dial tone if not then try another phone beg borrow or deal. if that still fails then its a BT problem get them to sort it out most of the time they can reset lines or somthing in the exchange and it starts working, you never know it could be somthing to do with when they moved you over to adsl in the exchange.
If you get a dial tone then your line is ok. from above work it out how your extention is connected in the front or the back?
where is the PC in relation to the main socket?
how many filters do you have?
let me know and I will try to help you out and tell you how to connect everything up.0 -
hi
i have 2 sockets, one has one telephone point on it, the other has two points for phones (laymans - one face place with 2 'holes' for phone leads)
just called virgin (thiis cost me £7.20 on 3) they said it points to it being set up incorrectly.
The sky plus has a built in splitter and that plugs into one of the points via a filter. (the 2 points generated by the splitter are not used)
A splitter goes into the 2nd point on the wall with phone and modem cable going into the splitter
bt installed the sockets as far as i know
i set up the modem using the cd and it's installed correctly i assume. When i dould click on the icon it flashes up requiring user name and password, i enter it and that's when it says 'unable to detect dial tone'
Thanks again0
