Autonet insurance cancelled my policy.

I was assured by a friendly advisor that they would contact my previous insurer and obtain No Claims confirmation.
Tried to add a second vehicle a few days later and was told that my policy had been cancelled and that I'd driven a whole day with no cover whatsoever!
I explained the previous conversation but was told there are no notes to indicate this.
I was given the choice to start a new policy and have 200 credit but still have to pay another deposit.
I said no thank you and went elsewhere.
So, the whole cover comes to about £1000. They have taken £370 in all; a deposit of £200 (25th Feb) and 2 DD payments of £80 (11th March) and £90 (28th March) and yesterday I get a letter asking for £166.97 to be paid within 7 days or a £25 admin fee will be applied.
If I fail to pay they will issue Court Proceedings against me. Should judgement be passed against me they will claim back Solicitors costs and court costs which could raise the above amount by a minimum fee of £80.
If judgement is passed against me they will ruin my credit rating too.
Should I just cough up?
What can I do?
PS The letter was sent from Lion Debt Recovery which is a trading name of Autonet
