Hi All,

Does anyone have any experience on taking baby food tins (heinz, 128grams) on board the airplane as hand lugagge? Would they have to tasted even if they are sealed?
Reason being is want to lighten the load on the suitcases as we already have to take nappies, milk cartons, wipes, lots of clothes for baby etc and we are finding it hard to stick to the allowance

Which part of the world are you going to where the shops don't have nappies and wipes? Why does your baby need so many clothes?

Perfectly possible for 2 adults and baby to go away with one large suitcase (23kg) between them, even to remote parts of the world.

I think maybe you should purchase them airside from boots, dont know where you are flying from, so check the airport facilities.
I prefer to take my own stuff as well. I have seen the airport staff dispose of babyfood before, but they were large jars.

Baby food and baby milk
You are allowed to take baby food, baby milk and sterilised water in your hand baggage. This includes:

• soya milk for babies
• sterilised water for the baby (must be in a baby bottle)
• formula, breast milk or cow milk specifically for babies
• baby food of various consistencies

You are allowed to take enough for the journey. In some cases this may be over 100ml. The adult carrying the baby food or milk may be asked to verify it by tasting.

'The journey' presumably means the flight - not your entire holiday.

Why not pop the baby food in your suitcase and the nappies/wipes/clothes in your hand luggage. I know the volume:weight ratio wouldn't be the same but it might help a little. Or research what you can buy out there. Or buy air-side.

I'd agree with the poster who said you can get the major brands of nappies and baby wipes abroad - where are you going? I'm sure there will be mse'ers who can tell you whats available there.

Protaras in Cyprus is where I'm heading. Be easy it's my first holiday with the family - 2 kids and partner We may well cut down on the nappies and wipes and see what we can get out there, as the tins of food would have to be tasted at security I'm presuming.

A couple of years back we were holidaying with the family and had a buggy bag to carry the buggy and we packed nappies around this inside...a bit sneaky but we got away with it. Mind on the way back we loaded it up too much and one of the handles came off !! Off subject here.....but a shade a babe for the buggy is a godsend....keeps the sun off baby during the day and ideal on a nightime if going out for a meal as it keeps baby in the dark and they sleep better. Also check when buying bottled water for baby it has not got a high sodium content...I think Evian is one of the better ones.

You can take it on the flight but would have to taste it - manchester airport even made us taste breast milk!!

I have been to Protaras and a lot of English actually live there so I'm sure you can get branded products

Babies don't need a lot of clothes on holiday in hot climates - when mine was 3 months, we were in Turkey in August and she basically lived in just nappies during the day, with a bodysuit to hand, a sunhat of course, and a parasol for her buggy. I had a couple of dresses for her for evenings, some socks and a fleece in case it was cold (it wasn't) and that was it really. I also, later that year when she was 7 months old and started to eat solids, took dried baby food on holiday instead of jars (got her used to it by replacing a jar with dried mixed food on one meal a day at home) -much less bulky and its dry so doesn't need tasting etc at the airport.
