Evening,

I've just been out in my car and noticed that the gear stick is shaking quite a lot and nearly jumps out of gear?

Any idea's what this could be?

Thanks.

FWD or RWD? Could be a worn gearbox mount.

Its a RWD I think! Its a RX8. The car is 3 years old, has 12,000 miles on the clock.

  • its been sat for a while or not used very often wich doing that can cause its own problems, especially those rotary engines. i would put it down to a gearbox mountain. epsecially if the gearstick moves violently back and forth during acceleration like it wants to pop out of gear and sometime do.

Janninew - I've an RX8 too - especially early ones, the 2003/04 ones had engine mounts that would wear too quickly due to the heat in the engine bay. The engine is meant to 'float' on these and will instead drop onto the metal and shake the whole car, especially the gearstick. Never heard of it causing it to pop out of gear though! Your car is far too new to have the old ones and too low mileage for the problem to happen you would think, but worth checking.
Unfortunately it might be something inside the gearbox which may mean replacing it.
And your car is RWD - didn't you notice how awful it was in the snow?!
Does the engine sound smooth? Idle normally?
