Fish tank, too heavy?

I'm after a fish tank for my daughters, I want to put it on a sideboard something like this http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/6141499/c_1/1|category_root|Home+and+furniture|14417894/c_2/2|14417894|Living+room+furniture|14418122/c_3/3|cat_14418122|Sideboards+and+chests+of+drawers|14418137.htm.
Someone has offered me one on freecycle that she says is about 4ft by 1.5ft, which is just a bit longer than the sideboard, would it be safe do you think?
Probably not I'm thinking, but it seems like such a good offer. I want to put guppies in it and some other fish for them to be friends with.

If the tank is 4x1.5x1.5 ft the weight would be about 250kg - whether the sideboard will be able to take that weight I don't know.0

dont forget the added weight of water plus gravel/sand, pump, ornaments etc, the weight of that tank on that could potentialy cause it to collapse.
good luck on your tank.0 -
Some one has offered me a slighly smaller one now thanks, but thanks for getting back to me. Its such a helpful site this.

I wouldn't be putting any reasonable sized fish tank on a sideboard, way too heavy!
One litre of water weighs around 1kg & even a 36x18x18 tank will hold around 190 litres... sideboards are not made to take that weight & it will collapse!Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -

smaller doesn not mean better, the larger the tank the more room for eror with water conditions. ofcourse you NEED o have a tank suited to your space too, a 1 foot tank is not ideal for something like a community tank where you have guppies of say five, guarmi's of say 3 and a maduim sized pleco. you will have amonia all over the place and fish die with that in the water. bigger the better is the way forward.
head over to tropical fish forums, free to register and a whole world of info on any type of fish you wish to keep what fish get along with each other and most of all the water piramiters of each fish's tollerances, how to setup a tank and how to cycle a tank,.0
