The range- poor garden equipment

Now I don't know much about gardening having only just got a garden but when the husband and I decided we wanted the weeds and plants removing from all down the side of the lawn we figured we would need a spade and fork. (Yes everyone I know thinks i'm mad for removing all of the lovely plants but we really don't want them).

A couple of weeks ago we purchased some basic ones from the range which were £7.99 each, so reasonably priced we assumed to not break the bank but also be of a good enough quality to get some plants out of some dirt.

Within one hour of using the fork the metal bit connecting the wooden handle to the prongs actually snapped in half! Took it straight back and they begrudgingly replaced it for us.

Fast forward to today and husband has just started doing some more gardening and within 20 mins of using the spade the wooden handle has snapped in half!



These products are obviously completely useless for any sort of gardening. I have emailed a complaint to let them know but wanted to warn others before they wasted their money like we did.

Also, can anyone recommend a garden fork and spade that is reasonably priced and capable of digging up the rest of these damn plants?

Sorry can't help you on this as most of my spades and forks are about 40 plus years old (inherited from parents, grandparents etc).

Have you got a farming shop near you? we use CWG (wool growers) to buy stuff like this, but it would be more expensive but will last you a lifetime.

Spend a bit more than £8 on them at least, still shouldnt brake like that though

If you have a Home Bargains near you, they have them for £4.99 each and are all metal and very sturdy. Got mine a few weeks ago and been doing very heavy duty gardening and they are fantastic!

this reminds me of the homebase fork i bought, 2 of the prongs snapped on the very first insert to the earth! took it back and bought a spade for 25 quid with a lifetime guarantee.

I'd try ebay! You can probably pick up something much better for very little money, but you'll rely on something being available close to where yo live, as it'll no doubt be collection only.

They should be for for purpose but with tools you really do get what you pay for.Best to buy decent ones and they last and more importantly don't break when you need them the most.

Thanks for the replies. I don't have any of the shops named anywhere near me apart from homebase. I'll have a look on ebay and if I can't find anything one from homebase or B&Q with a lifetime guarantee sounds like a good idea.
