Justgiving.com........Any good ?

My daughter and many others in Uni are raising money for "Link Community Development" and would like to set up a website to raise sponsorship money for the various moneymaking ideas they have.
"Justgiving.com" has been recommended to them as a site to use, but they take 5% of all donations as far as I can see.
I realise that there aren't many businesses that work for nothing but I was wondering if any of you know of this company and how safe they are ?
And, are there any others out there that do the same without taking as high a percentage ?
Thanks for your help !

I wish they'd take less, but so far they're one of the best of the bunch. I think as they grow, there might be pressure on them to do so.

In fact they take 5% of the donation including gift aid, and then there are the credit card fees etc.

That's the bad news. the good news is that typically, they make sure that the gift aid is claimed on donations, and stop errors from creeping in.

gift aid makes a £10 donation worth £12.82, and justgiving then take off just under a pound. What makes it attractive to charities is that the donations tend to go through when made, not when returned, so the charities get the donation up front. Since it's not always easy to get donations from people with a paper form, and then it's often hard to chase it up afterwards, many charities thnk that justgiving is worth that 5%. i work for a charity and last week got sponsor money through from someone that I had written off, it was for an event in MAY. And then the form wasn't completed properly, so I missed out on Gift Aid to a higher amount than the 5% I would have lost through justgiving.

Give you another example, a friend of mine used a paper form, now out of £200 which she paid to the charity at the time, she is still chasing £60. IN this case, she's lost out, not the charity, but you can see how the 5% is worth it to the charity.

There are other companies doing the same thing, and I can't think of any of the names.

BUT, here's the snag. The charity that you are fundraising for has to have signed up to justgiving in order for you to use the system.

best of luck with it, and if I can help answer anything else, just ask me.

yes, I realise I may appear cold and heartless a lot of the time.
  • I would fully endorse GiB - we have used justgiving for a charity event this year and from the feed back it has been a convenient way for people to donate. Our event was multi-national and we also used the American sister site 'firstgiving' with the same results.
Yes, they take a fee, but for the reasons stated by GiB the advantages outway the cost.

  • I used Justgiving.com for 2 charity events (for the Anthony Nolan Trust by the way). It is so easy to use, make your fundraising page, keep track of donations and for people not near you to sponsor you, also people may not always have the mopney ont hem to give, so this means they can go to your page anytime and donate. :T

Good luck with your events anyway.

  • JustGiving not only take 5% plus card charges if a charity registers with them to colect donations they also charge £15 per month,

Charity Choice is another web site doing the same thing for charities their services are free the only charge is the credit card fee

I dont know about anybody else but i like the idea of the money i am donating going where i want it to go, not to make rich people richer

just givings collections this year are set to top 70 million at just 5% thats 3.5 million without the other charges, or the additional 5% of the gift aid claimed

Can anyone tell me if its allowed that i include the link for Charity Choice
  • When i did a charity walk last year i used Paypal and it was so easy. I know they also take a percentage of the monies but don't think it's 5% although i may be wrong. Also the charity can claim the gift aid back themselves so no percentage will be taken from that.
    Good luck!

  • PayPal take 3.4% of your donation plus 20p per transaction they also take the percentage first so increasing their cut, unless your donation is quite large this can work out more expencive.

if you donate by debit card instead of a credit card this is even more expensive as debit card transaction fees when made through a reputable gateway carry a set fee of between 30 and 60p and are not subject to a percentage fee

PayPal charges the same percentage and transaction charge for both debit and credit cards.

Qwerky, Thank you for this... I completely agree that I want as much money to go to my chosen charity as possible. I have found the Charity Choice website (I think you can post it but as a newbie I'm not sure!) but although I can make an online donation, I don't seem to be able to set up a sub-page listing/detailing my specific fundraising for a particular event like you can on Just Giving. Perhaps it's just me, but if you can setup something like this on the Charity Choice site can you please point me in the right direction. Thank you.
