hi i am debt free with my electricity but i owe approx £450 on my gas with a new bill due at the end on may
the amount i pay is considerably higher than other utility companies so i plan on changing companies for my electricity anyway but im going to try to change my gas provider also ( i know its a slim chance considering the debt) if accepted can i lower the repayments of my gas bill with my current supplier to a minimum payment until im back on my feet?
so far ive managed to get myself out of a lot of debt but i cant afford the £140 pm fees from gas alone so i figure i could change suppliers and pay the approx £70 pm gas useage and a small fee to my current supplier so i can pay my other debts off and give myself enough money to put bread on the table.
will this work?
sorry if ive posted in the wrong place
ps please dont judge me im only asking for help xx

The 'better' rate is for having dual fuel, so perhaps it will be prudent to clear the gas debt 1st then change supplier.0

I'm reasonably sure that your current gas supplier won't let you switch without clearing the debt first (I stand to be corrected though). This being the case, as above, you will have to wait until it's paid off. Could you get an interest free credit card for a short time - you could clear £450 in less than a year and still be paying less per month?
NB £70 does seem high for gas though - is this just winter use and have you looked at ways to cut this?0 -
As DUTR says, better rates are with dual fuel. If you're not already on that, why not talk to your existing gas supplier about moving your electricity over to them and see what dual fuel rates they can offer bearing in mind the gas debt you already have?
Then, when you do clear the debt, you can looking at moving both to a more competitive supplier.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards.
