Family history isn't a cheap hobby. You might be able to get some way without spending money, depending on the names you are researching, but if you want certainty you will have to get certificates, which will cost.
Take care, it's addictive!0 -

I always advise people not to do it, on the basis that I started in 1986 researching my father's family as a 70th birthday present for him the following year.
It won't surprise anyone similarly afflicted to know that I am still going and some times doing the occasional paying job for other people.
Good advice from all the other posters.
Of course if you know someone with a subscription to Genes Reunited they can send a message on your behalf...

I have been on genes reunited and have managed to make a start on my family tree. If I want to look into census records or contact anyone, I need to pay a subscription. As I am a bit tight (yes, just a bit!!!!) I don't want to pay if I can get around it. Is there anyone out there that knows of a free way to do it?
In the early 1980's, one of my aunts did our family tree (father's side) all the way back to the late 1600's WELL before these days of internet and current fashion for research.
Your local County Council should have a records office (free to search). And, where my aunt had most success, parish records from churches where my ancestors were christened, married and buried.
First step is to speak to older members of the family and/or their friends, to see if they can recall people and places and start from there. It's great detective work, free, and more satisfying.
Good luck! xx0 -

I dont think you can do it on the cheap if you want it to be accurate. Ive been doing mine for nearly 10 years now and you really will need to spend some money on certs and other items or you can end up with totally the wrong line and that would be worse than useless.
Compared with other hobbies, its not expensive - you can get an ancestry sub with 20% off through topcashback - get at least the premium one not just the essential one. And GR is really very cheap to join to contact people. I dont think your heart is really in this if you dont want to spend just a few quid.0
