Looks great OP. You built that dry wall yourselves? I'm very impressed!
I agree with what everyone says about cheap clematis. Only £3 ish in Wilkos (not sure if they have any more) and they grow so quickly.

Also, regarding the neighbour's garden - if it's full of rubbish I'm not too sure they'd care about a bit of sunlight being blocked! Unless they fancy sunbathing on top of their old television set ...

I hope that nice new tall fence doesn't stop too much sun getting to the neighbour, because I'd be annoyed if it did and it was me.

To be fair Strapped, most keen gardeners value their light. I'd be a wee bit fed up myself if my previously sunny garden became a dull shaded area because of my neighbour's actions.

I just think in this case that doesn't seem to be something to be overly concerned about. All just imo of course. :)

well from the above photo, i do feel that we have made a bit of headway over the past 48 hours.

That in 48 hours is a tremendous clean up and transformation! I wish I could do it, or find people to pay who achieved as much in two days! How lucky your kids are!

re planting and easy care for food....a tub of jerusalem artichokes, for example, give colour and don't need to be eated, but could be there when times are tough!Nasturtiums are cheap, and make a great addition to salad, and are super- colourful. Herbs, herbs and herbs...s expensive to buy from the supermarket, thrive in practical neglect. Rhubarb is perfect for low care and big leafiness. Strawberries are a brilliant idea: indestructible, pretty, and ground cover...to help negate need to weed. Climbing things that can be useful as well as pretty...grapes...yum! (or, to encourage s-i-l in a grow your on push what about hops!?)
