Stare it straight in the eye, hold eye contact, and without making any sound, draw your lips back in a snarling fashion. If it's trying to establish dominance over you, you have to take dominance over it.

Then could you post it on YouTube please? Nothing on telly tonight...

We have two dogs (both giant breeds, the girl is 3 years and the dog is 5 years).

We are in rented accommodation so have moved a few times since we have had them both.

The dog takes moving completely in his stride and causes no issues, but the girl gets very distraught and often takes two or three weeks to settle down. She doesn't bark, but whines very loudly. After this time, we have no problems with her at all.

Whenever we move, we always take off two weeks to help her to settle and introduce ourselves to the neighbours. We have always asked them to come to us if they find her a problem and *touch wood* we never have had a problem.

I would be very upset if i thought that my neighbours were finding it a problem as we always try our best to keep her happy and content (and the same goes for the neighbours!) I do, however, feel the same way as the poster above and it would not go down well if someone had a problem with our girl and decided they were going to use anti barking devices etc instead of speaking to us.

Whether I am in the minority or not I am not sure, but I also wouldn't be happy about people throwing treats over the fence without my knowledge. Mainly as the dog has allergies and can only eat very specific foods. Anything else will make him very ill and could even warrant a vet trip.

If it was me, I would go around next door and just speak to them. Odds are that they don't even know it's happening as *most* dog owners wouldn't like the thought of their dog being distraught all day anyway.

I hope that things sort themselves out for you as it must be a horrible situation to be in. x

ETA: I really hope that no-one takes the advice to try and dominate a dog they don't know. Especially one that would be entirely defending their own territory. You might as well just leap over the fence and try to alpha roll it. It would be just as annoyed with you.

I'm in a similar position to the OP.

I live in a terraced house.

One immediate next door neighbour keeps a dog. She and I have kitchen doors that are no more than 10 feet apart with a high fence between us.

The dog, Tyler, has simply been thrown out of the back door, has no toys, no regular walks, isn't kept clean, isn't brought into the house regardless of the weather and has had no training whatsoever.

The dog is showing stereotyped behaviour - running from kitchen door to back gate and back again repeatedly and barks at the slightest thing.

I call the RSPCA on occasion and as far as they're concerned, the dog is fed, watered and has some sort of shelter - an outside cupboard with the door left permanently open. There is no overt abuse, so as far as they're concerned, there is nothing wrong.

The dog scratches and scrapes the kitchen door and is often up on its hind legs with its front paws on the window sill.

Faeces is left for days, if not weeks and the smell is atrocious. Trust me. Nothing has been cleaned for weeks and now the warm weather has kicked in, the stench and the cloud of flies it attracts is atrocious.

The dog goes nuts and flings itself at the fence the second it hears my keys in my kitchen door lock and carries on barking and jumping long after I've gone back into my house.

There is no fresh air, no real work going on in my garden (I'm scared of dogs that want to try and eat me) and although I've contacted the housing association, they're not that interested either.

The dog had broken small sections of the fence before now which I have had to steel myself to repair. I do find I feel ever so much braver with a 2lb lump hammer in my hand .

I was sweeping the kitchen floor this afternoon with the kitchen door closed and locked and the dog barked the entire time I was in there.

The woman lives with a pair of small children who are left to play on the pavement instead of the yard or the garden beyond the back gate and has received numerous letters and visits regarding the state of the house and backyard.

She attracts the wrong kind of criminally inclined boyfriend (the drug dealer who used her as the official owner of his car was one of the many lows) and is, frankly, the kind of screeching chav one crosses the street to avoid.

I, and the neighbours on her other side, have called the police on numerous occasions for fights and disturbances. I have both the beat bobby's personal and work mobile 'phone number and I'm on first name terms with her Tenancy Support Worker at the Housing Association which owns the house.

If I decided to have a 'quiet word' with this social services horror show, I would probably crawl away holding a few teeth.

All the bark stopppers seem to require a clear line of sight to the offending mutt.

I'm keeping a noise diary for the local council, but they want three months worth.

    I am utterly fed up.
 Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway...

Jeez any need for such terms ? How do you know that the neighbours are selfish scumbags ? They are new there and might not know that their dog is taking time to settle in.
I dislike the use of "!!!!!!" as it is an known americanisum for being offensive and serves no purpose to the topic.

I guess you don't like dogs then.

Really there is no need for such a reply based on the very little the op offered. There was nothing to say how long it barked for, if it was daily, how long the tenants had been there, have they been told about the dog etc etc

I've come tot he conclusion that evoke is either suffering from bi-polar disorder or his posts are a reflection of whether he's getting "any" or not. ;)
