Alistair - nope, don't think that would work as the money is in the bank and not your pocket, so the cheque must be an official one that other banks will accept as such.

Summer - as Kepar says, the OP is post BR. But even if they were within their BR year, if they can find the nominal cost of a chess tournament fee within their allowances then that shouldn't generally be a problem. Although having said that, some ORs seem to be getting stricter and say if a bit of surplus can be found for other things then they want that surplus!

As usual, the press totally ignore reality, preferring to defer to popularist ideas of what Bankruptcy is, and means.

No mention whatsoever..of the fact that creditors actually receive little if anything from most personal BRs....and that the tightening-up of the rules simply means the Insolvency Service is trying to balance its own books.

No mention of the fact that the IS finances its admin costs from income generated by IPA's.

I noted a comment regarding maintaining the stigma attached to bankruptcy.

Well, lets all have for increasing the stigma attached to divorce!

    Or a Criminal record?

Oh, sorry, money matters more than individual morality, or damaged emotions?

A pity the comments were closed..I'd have laid it all wide open!
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......

Banks will be reluctant to give even a discharged bankrupt a chequebook because it's a form of credit, even though they can return any cheque unpaid.

If there's a guarantee card, that could be £50 X 25 cheques which is £1,250.

I have a vague recollection of the term 'counter cheque', which at one time was used in branches.

Bit of a faff on, but it might be possible to go to the branch, queue to see a cashier, fill out a counter cheque, and post it.

    Worth asking the bank.
