Staircase Spindle Help!

Hello everyone,
In need of some spindles 36mm x at least 840mm.
We are currently having the whole staircase area re-plastered. All the door frames and skirting boards are being stripped of their paint and varnish using a heat gun. Along the top of the stairs is a straight banister with around 13 spindles in. We have stripped off the top of the rail and the ends but thought it would be an easier job just to get some new spindles than spend hours stripping them all. They are all out now but we can't find any to fit back in
. They sit tight into the top of the rail that is up and there are holes in the floor for the bottom. Each spindle needs to be 36mm wide to fit in and at least 840mm tall. Cannot find it anywhere. It seems that the common sizes are 41mm and 32mm which are all no good at all.
Wickes do one that we bought, fits perfect in the top or the bottom but thats it, its not long enough!

Any ideas where we can get some from? The last option would be to run a piece of wood along the bottom to bring the height up and secure them to the bottom another way.
I hope everyone understands this :T
Thanks

I quickly Googled 840mm high stair spindles
......and found loads of results.
maybe a trawl around will help you. I'm sure someone out there can
make them for you , but then it may come at a price.Am the proud holder of an Honours Degree

It's all i have been doing all night, its not so much the height at the minute just the width of 36mm seems to be uncommon.
Off to google i go again !
Here is a picture also just for anyone. http://img864.imageshack.us/img864/8839/thepicture.jpgThings that are free in life are great, well most of the time :beer:0 -
OP, now you have removed them, why not take your existing spindles to be chemically stripped?
Somewhere like this company.
There might be a similar facility near you.0 -
Maybe these were originally 38mm i.e. one and a half inch, pre metric. Maybe try a salvage yard, or see if a manufacturer like Richard Burbage would do these as a special ?0
-
use a heat gun to strip them, diy, or take them to a chemical stripper.
unless you can find them cheap at a salvage yard.
beware.
ive seen victorian ones go for silly money. 400/800 quid a set!Get some gorm.0 -
Google on custom stair parts. I am sure that if you cannot find them ready made, someone will be pleased to make them for you. Before you look too hard, work out how much you would pay not to have to strip them yourself. And then compare the price of having them made and the price of having them stripped.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. To give you a ballpark idea, I paid £1.10 per spindle to have mine chemically stripped a couple of months ago.
Much cheaper than new and I know they already fit.0 -
wickes (or BQ) were selling new ones for quid last year.
cant remember the sizes.Get some gorm.0 -
Get 'em dipped, wipe 'em over with some vinegar. Let'em dry, prime, undercoat and top coat, re-fit, job done.
Get on with it, it's cheaper, you know they fit and suit the staircase. Thanks for the reply. It would make sense to get them stripped, and probably should have been thought of, but to get them out all together they had to be broke so they are all ruined now. I am going to check out a local timber place later on then if not it will probably be the smaller ones from Wickes and a bit of DIY to make them fit, shouldn't look out of place anyway.Things that are free in life are great, well most of the time :beer:0
