Its good to hear that people are not having problems adjusting DD. My main concern really is that the only company that are offering us a cheap tarrif happens to be the one that last time would not change our DD amount, and from what I read online they still have very poor customer service.

I fully understand your position regarding paying monthly by DD, onlineo.

It may not be the cheapest option to pay on receipt of bill, but at least you only pay for what you have used and you can immediately manage that cost (by modifying your usage). I too have had bad experiences in the past paying monthly by DD, but financial pressures persuaded me to try this method again (despite saying I never would) and already I've had problems.
Sometimes it's better to pay a little more for peace of mind and less hassle.

Anyway, if I understand your question correctly, you are looking for a fixed (or possibly capped?) priced tariff that will allow you to pay on receipt of bill (perhaps paying quarterly by DD? but only the amount as billed)

Use a comparison site. E.g energyhelpline gives you this very option.
Currently showing appears to be 2 tariffs by EDF (Fixed s@ver 2 and Fixed Price 2014) and one by Eon (Age UK Price protection April 2013) which allow for payment on receipt of bill by cash, cheque, etc.

If you are prepared to pay quarterly by DD (after receipt of bill) then there is a capped deal tariff from nPower - Price Protector.

Thanks for all the details and sharing your experiences. It is useful to know that quarterly DD is paid after so can be baised on your actual bill. I have just checked the comparison sites and I can save £30-£60 switching or £5-11 switching onto a fixed.
