Computer book for beginners?

I apologise in advance if this is in the wrong category, as this seems the best to put it in.
My mum has got my old computer, and wants to learn, she has no knowledge what so ever in using computers, she has no clue what Microsoft, Windows is etc.
I bought her three books:
Windows Vista for Dummies
Office XP for Dummies
Internet for Dummies
(Total of £6)
The first top 2 arrived today and after flicking through the Vista one I don't think she will find it helpful in starting from my point of view, and I'm guessing the same will apply to the other 2. I did say to her to give it a try and let me know if it's a bit complex and I will get a new one.
She hasn't started yet,and in case she does say it's a bit complex, I don't want to waste more money on another book if the same applies. Does anyone know of any books that are handy for a complete novice?
I was thinking of going with her to join a library and borrow a book for this type to try it and if she likes it then I will get it. Haven't been to a library in years so unsure if they stock these type of books.

Maybe easier to take her to one of the many free computer courses for those who do not know anything about computers. I believe they are run in libraries and LearnDirect do do free ones...0

Learn With Pictures, Not Words
In Pictures online tutorials are based on pictures, not words. They're the easiest way to learn computer subjects.0 -
Honestly - learn by doing!
Have you thought about having one of your kids (if you have any! or neices, newphews) or yourself, just going around doing stuff on the computer?0 -
I would set the computer up for her, let her know what malware is and how to avoid being affected by it, and how to use a search engine to answer any questions she may have.
That'll be the basics covered, and she'll be able to learn more (by performing web searches) whilst also getting a bit of basic experience.0 -
Definitely find out if there is a class locally - they are all over the place now, especially if she is a senior.0

This book is quite good for beginners and will also help you with installation as it has an operating system included - she won't have to be very concerned about malware etc by the way.

You cannot beat the "Dummies Guide" range of books. They go from simple to advanced in easy to understand plain English.0
