Laying slabs, do I need a cement mixer or not?

I have a piece of string here. Please tell me how long it is.

It will depend on a number of things. How level the ground is, what needs to be excavated, access to garden etc.

ok....been asked to sort out the hiring and execution of 15 3'x2' council flags laid for a friends friend,who is very ill after hospitalisation.....The remit is very low budget,and after reading everything here i'm thinking,if laid straight onto the soil,with excavation to depth of flag,with minimum sharp sand for levelling,and pointed mortar in gaps between.Then in future, if money and circumstances change,easy to remove or replace,but in the short term a level flagged low maintenance area all the same.

Area is flat lawn,no roots,rubble,or other nasties,just grass and dirt.
Access is problem,as rear only available through house,another reason dont want lots of material needed.
Flags are already in back garden donated from a friend at weekend.
