Credit score help please

Hi, new member here so apologise if ive posted in the wrong place or anything. I've read info from these forums for a number of years and took some great advice so was wondering if anyone could help.

Whilst at Uni (5 years ago) I had an account closed and passed onto debt collection due to not making payments on my overdraft. I have since paid all the money back.

Ever since I have struggled to get credit anywhere. I am currently working as a teacher and renting a flat with my girlfriend. Six months ago I was rejected for a store card at Debenhams, a loan, credit card and overdraft from my bank (who ive been with for 10 years, although had quite a few charges), and finance on a sofa at CSL.

So today I decided to check out my credit score today, I have a rating of 3 with a score value of 584. There is nothing marked on my report to say ive done anything wrong apart from 3 unauthorised overdraft entries on my bank account.

Does anybody know why I am getting rejected for credit? I have friend who earn much less money who get credit for anything. am not on the electoral list which I understand isnt helpful so am in the process of changing that. Any other advice would be massively appreciated.

sorry for the long post.
Thanks!

Not being on the electoral roll which mean you are automatically declined by many lenders.

Which credit reference agency have you looked at your credit file for? What are the dates of those unauthorised overdraft entries? What other credit accounts do you have showing on this file?

Don't bother paying for a score from any of the crfit reference agencies, instead get the main report and check that everything on those is correct (you can get the £2 statutory report from each of the 3 credit reference agencies).

  • Thanks Tixy I hadnt realised not being on the electoral list was so bad, glad i've sorted that out.
I used credit score matters and the dates are once in Jan this year and once in Nov 2010. The only accounts I have showing on the file are my three bank accounts because I have nothing else, my phone contract is in my dads name from when I was younger and Ive never bought anything on credit really.

Thanks for your help and i'll definatly check out the link :)
