MBNA Residual Interest Help

in Credit cards
I have an MBNA credit card which I always pay in full every month.
last month I had an amount to pay but had done some online shopping which I returned so the item was credited well before the due date to be paid. I paid the rest of the balance so left my card with a zero balance by the due date.
Today I have received my next statement and have been charged interest even though my balance was zero. When I called to query this they told me that because I had physically not paid the amount due there was a residual interest charge, because the shopping credit did not count towards payment. The basically said I had to pay the amount that had been credited and put my account into a credit balance as I had not used it last month and then reclaim the money from them.
Does anyone know where I stand on this as they are very unhelpful.

I would try calling again. If your account was clear before your due date then you wouldnt get any interest. If however either the credit or the payment arrived after the due date, then they are correct. Do you have any more info such as closing balance, due date, date payment recieved, date credit recieved? I'd call them back, if you're not happy then keep pushing for a thorough explanation!0
