LA FITNESS - please help

I am seeking some advice here, before I make any telephone calls or send any letters.

I recently re-joined my gym (LA Fitness) about 3 weeks ago. I paid upfront for the year, as I did last year, as I am happy with the place and do not want to worry about DD payments etc - it was also a tad cheaper.

In the past two days however I have noticed signs up stating that they intend to amend the opening hours of the gym in a weeks time!

The times will amend to be 1 hour earlier closing (10pm to 9pm) on Friday, and two hours earlier at the weekend (8pm to 6pm).

 This annoys me very much, as the last two hours are my core hours. If I work at the weekend I could get there for 6pm and spend a couple of hours in the gym or relaxing in the pool/sauna. Now I won't be able to get there before it closes.

I have to say that if I was aware of this at the time it would have made me consider my options with regards other gym's in the area. But it was not made aware to me and I thought it would all be the same as the previous year.

I have sent an email to my gym, asking why this is the case and I asked the girl at reception last night, she just says that the staff were as unaware as us, and it came from Head Office.

What I am thinking is how do I approach this? Ideally I'd like to start a petition with others and get a compromise, at the very least speak to head office to find out why this is happening and what my options are?

Can I cancel? I filled out some form of agreement, but not a financial one, as they have my money already. I notice a clause about giving one months notice to cancel - but after reading lots of horror stories on forums god knows how that will pan out. Surely this is them breaching their contract with me? There are 5 hours less available time than when I originally agreed.

I have to say I do not know that I want to cancel, I just may HAVE to as I'll need to get membership elsewhere that CAN accomodate me - just thinking about all options.

Any ideas? Anyone?!!!

Was also just thinking - how much time would you say is reasonable to make a change to opening hours (in advanve that is).

Just wanted to know what to say when I ring their Head Office

    Thanks in Advance!

It would probably help your case if you have proof that you have so far been using the gym in the hours that they will no longer be open.

If you can do that, the change is probably significant contract change.

Make your protest as soon as possible.
Otherwise you could be seen to have accepted the change.

Thankyou very much. Difficult on proof - although I do go to see a Peronal trainer there at those times, so that may help.

It's hard on the accepting change part when they only give you a little over a weeks notice!
