Local charity is looking for an accounting software package.
No VAT, no salaries.
Just need to record income & expenditure with reports.

Basic and simple.

Thanks

A Lot of people like VT Cashbook /Transaction, Cashbook software is free and the more advanced elements are relatively cheap. I'm setting up a practicing accountant shortly and it's the package that I'm going for.

Another option is quickbooks - not really sure of the pros/cons with this software.

If there are relatively few transactions of a straightforward nature then it may be possible to just keep excel records, but that would depend on the specific situation. For example in my case the irony is that as an accountant my own transactions will be so simple that I could easily track them on a simple spreadsheet!

not disagreeing with any of the answers already given, but who audits their accounts, and what do they recommend?

We use QuickBooks, on the advice of our auditors. I'm not sure I'd recommend it to a novice: we had some dire training, followed by some excellent training, but you need to know a little bit of accountantspeak to get it to work, I feel.

They have not been given any preferrence by the auditor at all, just to use whatever they feel happy with.
So a simple - preferrable free package would be great.
It just needs to show income & expenditure with breakdowns.

I'd second the VT Cashbook - it's easy to use and free!

I've also been using VT Cashbook (and have bought the upgrade this year since I have credit accounts with suppliers) I think it's easy to set up and use.
