Dogs and barbeques : a warning :(

A friend on another forum has just lost her beloved dog after it ate a wooden kebab skewer at a barbecue. The pieces of wood pierced her intestines and she developed peritonitis and was unsaveable. sml_neg.pngsml_neg.png Sadly this isn't uncommon during the summer months; many barbecue items are terribly risky for dogs. We all know about the risks of cooked bones, and unattended chicken and chop bones are frequently stolen by crafty dogs, but wooden skewers are very tasty because of being soaked in food juices, and corncobs (yummy butter) are well-known for causing impaction in the bowel requiring surgery.

Please let Pebbles' death save others from a similar fate, and make sure all barbecue food and debris is kept safely out of the reach of your dogs.

Also remember to put all corncobs in the bin - not on the compost heap - they cause untold damage and I know of two dogs last y
ear who died as a result of eating corncobs, being retained in the intestine and dying before surgery.

  • OMG that is awful and thanks for sharing!
I had no idea at all about corn cobs and have actually given mine them before, they didn't eat them!
RE the kebabs that is something i just wouldn't have thought about.
I shall share this info with everyone i know that has dogs!
  • another reason not to have a BBQ! - I hate the damn things, No to be fair, I quite like them when we're camping on a site, where we're all BBQing as part of the experience. It's at home when we finally have a good days weather, I look & think Ahh & get a shed load of washing done (Don't own tumble dryer),as soon as its on the line the neighbour cranks up his BBQ & I've got to bring it in to stop it from smelling. Sorry to hijack yr thread with my Victor Meldrew rant, very sad for both the dog & the owners. My dog is a bit of a thief( & a tall one!) so will keep an eye If I'm forced, sorry, invited to a BBQ

well i always keep things out the pups way.. comon sense really.

    But.. corn on the cobs?

pup loves chewing one when we have finished with them, admittedly he can't digest them, we give them him more as a chew treat than anything else.

Can you link where corncobs is dangerous for dogs?

On PickTV (also Animal Planet I think) there is a series called Bondi Vet which finished last week (it's a repeat of an old series). A recent episode involved a dalmation that had an obstruction in his bowel. It was extremely serious and if the dog couldn't pass the obstruction then it would be necessary to operate, and they didn't really want to resort to surgery. I think they were willing to wait 48 hours, can't quite remember and kept him in the hospital. The time was almost up and they were just about to make the decision that they could wait no longer and the dog managed to eliminate. The obstruction turned out to be part of a corn cob and they explained how dangerous this was.

Here is a link to a brief description of the episode but it doesn't look like you can watch it online - it's Australia's Channel Ten website.

Here's a link to an article about the danger of corn cobs to dogs.

Didn't mean to take over the thread but no-one seems to have come back with a link for you.

Awww, poor Perry! If you want to console him with a special treat, have you seen Stag Bars. I got one for Poppy recently and she loves it. They seem expensive but they should last a long time and much cleaner than a bone. (I'm not connected, just recommending a nice treat.)

Budget alternative - a carrot but it wont last as long :D. Poppy loves a whole carrot.

OMG I had no idea about corn on the cob, mine too have slightly chewed - more licked the butter - but left them, so I won't be giving them anymore , thanks for that link....

One of my rotties also ate a wooden kebab skewer, my fault - I was un-threading meat off them (cooked) and dropped one and he was like lightning and swallowed the lot in a second....

Luckily he was operated on and it was removed, and he made a full recovery, he had to spend a week at the vets and it was £600 just for the anaesthetic, then, you can't put a price on your pets can you...I was just so grateful that he was ok and eternally grateful to the vets who saved him....
