What increased purchase protection does Visa Debit offer me?

If you pay for goods or services with your Visa Debit card and they fail to arrive or are damaged when you receive them, we could help recover your payment. This may include companies that have gone into administration before you have received the goods or services. To take advantage of this you must have contacted the retailer directly to try and resolve the issue and been unsuccessful. If this does happen to you please contact your branch or call 0845 366 0452 and our dedicated team will be able to help.

Tell them (your credit card co) you have paid by credit card and are making a Section 75 claim for the full amount. If they argue tell them that they and the retailer are jointly and severally liable for the amount so they can sort it out with the retailer themselves since you are making the claim against them (credit card co).

Done it myself, bank soon caved in

OP didn't use a credit card, they used a debit card, so a s75 claim doesn't enter in to it. OP as you said you need to do a visa debit chargeback with your bank.
