Do I qualify for housing benefit?

I'm 23 and just started claiming JSA (not sure whether it's income based or contribution based) as my fixed-term contract at my old job ended. I'm looking for another job.

I'm renting a bedroom from my dad and stepmum. I think if you're living with immediate family and therefore 'not responsible' for paying rent then it's a no - is that right?

The other thing is, I'm a part-time university student and I've read that they can claim. Will my entitlement on this basis be nullified by the fact I'm not directly responsible for the rent?

Thanks!

you cant claim housing benefit for renting a room from a close relative, otherwise every 18+ that still lived at home would be claiming!

Thanks. I'm assuming that overrides the part-time student element also?

claim what as a part time student exactly?
you are already claiming JSA. what else do you think you may be entitled to?

Housing benefit, as in the thread title. And I'm trying to establish if I'm entitled to anything to go towards my rent, having never had to claim benefits before. Are you always this condescending?

the fact that you are living with parents over rides any entitlement that you may have had.
you living with them doesnt increase their rent, so your talking about food and a portion of the bills, which is what your JSA is for.

Yes Lemonfizz - he/she IS always this condescending.

You asked a fair question and expected a fair answer.

    What's wrong with that nannytone?

i gave the information asked for.
i didn't understand what being a part time student had to do with the question, so i asked. i needed to know what the OP thought they were entitled to in order to either agree or disagree.
i fail to see how that is condescending, but each to their own lol

Part time students are eligible to claim benefits but, as nannytone has said, you cannot claim LHA when living in the same accommodation as close family.

You came across as rude and abrupt with absolutely no justification.

That's all I needed to know. Thank you.

just because the answer you got wasn't what you wanted to hear doesnt make me rude.

you seem to think being a part time student is the key to everything you wanted to hear!

i'll accept part of the thanks you gave older not wiser, as they agreed with my original posting lol
