is it true that you have to have a credit card to hire cars and why can you not use a debit card?. I am going on holiday to portugal and want to hire a car but have only ever had a visa debit card, can anyone recommend a good credit card? Thanks , Andrew

Just been through this myself - many car hire companies do require a credit card rather than a debit card. Something to do with the fact that if they need to make a claim against you (eg damage to the hire car) then it's much easier for them to do so from a credit card.
If you don't want to get a credit card, Portugal Auto Rentals will accept cash rentals (according to their website).LBM August 2007Amount Owed £101,068.35
