Basic Bank Account Thread

Hello, I'm new. I have tried to get a new basic current account as the one I have at the moment is a joint account and I need a single account. I have been refused by 4 banks so far. I thought it was easy to get a current account, its not like getting lots of credit. Why are they refusing me? I do currently have lots of debt which is joint with my husband but would that affect me getting a current account?
Who do you bank with?
Does your husband have a current account other than the joint one with your bank?
If so speak to your bank manager or senior member of staff with your husband and have his name removed from the joint account.
IF you have a joint e-savings account keep it open so you can transfer money to one another easier.
If however none of the above apply to your situation perhaps try and open up a basic account with Barclays and specifically asking them for a cash account. It should require no credit check.0 -
Hi Everybody
I've already got an Easycash account with the Halifax. This I want to keep for personal use.
I say this as I've recently started to make money online (some from Ebay/Amazon but mostly from matched betting, bonus bagging, Betfair trading etc) and I want a second bank account for these activities.
Can anybody recommend an account? The sort of facilities that I already have with the Easycash account would be absolutely fine.
They gave me a Visa Electron card which works fine for online payments to bookies and Betfair etc. They offer online banking so I can set up direct debits/standing orders and (more importantly) check for payments being made into my account. All for which there doesn't seem to be any kind of bank charges.
However I remember reading the T&C for the Easycash account and they forbade any kind of business activities. Now I'm not sure if what I'm doing could be classified as a business or not but the number of transactions is starting to increase and there's more money coming in than going out if this is any indication. Thus I'm thinking that this might trigger some kind of alert with the bank. I'm just a bit worried that they might suspend/close my account for breach of their T&C.
Plus I just think it'd be good idea to separate the two i.e. personal and "business". So, does anyone know of a basic account (my credit rating is poor) which I could use?
Regards

Hi everyone.
Like many of you, due to my inability to control my finances I ended up in loads of debt.
Struggling to get a bank account, then I read about te basic account with Co-op.
I have to say opening it was a godsend. Debit card, direct debits Nd real online banking has allowed me to live a normal life.
I have various defaults to my name, and they will all clear off my report in 2014 (some already have), but I have agreements in place for most of them and plan on sorting the rest.
The advice in this forum is great, so Thank you to everyone.
And to those in a similar situation - it does get betterOn the road to recovery!0 -

I hope OP that mine is a one off, but I doubt it.0 -
Hi.
I've had the account for almost 2 1/2 years now, and haven't had any issues. Other than not having a "live" available balance.
But this hasn't stopped me, I have just been accepted for a proper account with RBS, but will keep this one going.
My advice to people is if your desperate for a basic account. Use co-op.On the road to recovery!0 -
I've had two co-op cashminder accounts for a while now. One for bills and one for what I have left. The only draw backs is that I have no cheque book which hasn't been a major problem and a few sites don't accept Visa Electron but apart from that they've been fine. Its easy to use the internet banking and to transfer funds between accounts. Plus you can pay cash in at the PO (don't know about other banks).0

I don't know how long you've held this account, but when I opened mine, I too thought it was everything I wanted, just a plain and simple account. Now I'm so disillusioned, I'm going to start a new thread to warn others.
I hope OP that mine is a one off, but I doubt it.
Same with me, i was pretty dissapointed.Striving for excellence motivates you; striving for perfection is demoralizing. 0 -
Well, I just applied for the Coop over the phone and it was easy and quick, and I was accepted. We will see how the account goes, but the process so far was very easy indeed.0

Good luck:) I opened an internet savings account to go with my two Co-op accounts. You can open that online (really easy) and it links in with your current account, just makes budgeting a bit easier:)0

Has anyone ever managed to get there account upgraded to a current account with barclays.
I have had there cash card account for 5years, an isa, monthly savings and a stockbrokers account.
On my credit file i have 2 defaults one drops off in feb2013 and the other dec2013.
I have tried to upgrade my account with them on 3 occasions and been refused everytime.
Should i just give up and move my business elsewhere, and who would most likely give me a current account, Thankyou in advance0
