Ironically cash won't get you a long way now, a large proportion of the profit in a new vehicle sale is made in the finance, so the good old days of walking in and paying cash are gone.

I assume you mean paying in full be cheque/bank transfer. Don't even consider actaul cash, there' a whole load of hoops to jump through with regard to anti terroist laws (money laundering etc).

Once you decide what you want, look at Martin's article on buying a new car, there are internet brokers that will link you to dealerships running best offers on a car that fits your bill.

We contacted every one on Martin's list and broker4cars put me in contact with a dealership that found us an absolute stonker of a deal. It was from a boafide Mercedes-Benz dealership that they put us in contact with so there was no question of them being dodgy at all.

Lots of telephone calls involved, we went to test drive at our local dealer and simply had the cheaper dealership, which was miles and miles away, send us the car. :)

The new Clio looks really nice close up, quite big too! The inside of a Megane is horrid. I hate my husband's Peugeot, it's flimsy. I'd probably play it safe with a Ford! :)

Your best bet is to buy online if you want a simple experience. (A lot of Scottish dealers especially are one particular chain, which I don't need to name). That said, I would ask here or at a motoring forum if you decide to go the broker route, to see if anyone has any experiences of buying from that particular broker. The best reputation seems to belong to http://www.drivethedeal.com

If I wanted a budget car, I'd consider a Kio Rio Zapp - 1.4 petrol, £6,495 - http://www.mkkia.co.uk/rio.aspx - with air con, five doors, a decent amount of space, quick and safe. It holds its value quite well second hand (so far at least) and should be very reliable with a three-year, unlimited mileage warranty.

A chain which, not inappropriately, rhymes with shark? :)

  • Hmmmmmm yes that is part of the problem everything around here seems to be owned by this particular company. My dad who is the purchaser has narrowed it down to a Toyota Yaris or a Suzuki Swift. We have been online but so far have not come up with any particularily good deals. He is hoping to complete his purchase at the end of this month so any advice appreciated.

If your serious about the Swift, then let me know. A guy I fly helicopters with, his family business is a Suzuki dealership - and its nothing to do with 'Arny Sharks'. Dont know if I can get you any real discount, but at least the cash thing could get accepted. As has been pointed out on here, dealers hate cash as the profit is all in the finance they get from the sheeple out there.

Cant blame you for staying away from a certain dealer. Kick Sharks real name into Google, and about 2 pages in you'll find a website detailing folks experiences there (horrific mostly). The reason the papers dont tear him to pieces is because he gives them so much advertising revenue, they won't bite the hand that feeds.

    Good luck anyways:money:

Look into negotiating a fininace deal if they will give a discount for finance, theres a 14 day cooling off period cancel in the 14 days and pay off the finiance with cash (well debit card or credit card)
If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

  • Hi everyone my dad took the plunge Thursday and got himself a swift. You were right about them not being interested in cash asd tried to get him on to finance. I explained to him about cancelling but he wasn't keen. Anyway he negotiated what he thought was agood deal and signed for it. He got the car the next day!!!! So far he is happy with it.
    Thanks to all who responded.
