Wasn't a Nikon by any chance was it ??

I personally think your boss is a fool for allowing a new employee to sell such expensive items on their very first day - people are bound to make mistakes when they've only just started a job and you surely should have had someone supervising you! Sorry, I know that doesn't actually help decide what to do about it.0

Thanks for all your replies.
It wasn't money as such. A customer was looking at cameras. He decided on one. I did the purchase transaction, packed the camera for him and off he went. When I was putting the others away, I realised I had given him a more expensive one. They were the same make and everything (boxes and the actual cameras) is very alike. The difference in price is hundreds of £s.

Actually... its by default unlawful to deduct till shortfalls from an employees wages, its only if the employer as defined the deduction in the employment contract it is allowed!
Everybodies advise may also be wrong, since op is yet to mention what it said in the employment contract.
So your advise "Ask to pay it back over the next few weeks" is pretty unhelpful and presumptious since until we know if its in his contract they may not have the right to deduct the money.
So yet another useful post by yourself also !:T0 -

You'll find that in a lot of makes/models of cameras.
You'll need to check model numbers VERY carefully in future - if you even have a future at the shop.
Were you given any on-the-job training about checking carefully that you'd got the right make/model?
Is your employer a small independant company or a large chain?0 -
Just to add further information to your rights if your employer fires you:
Unfair dismissal
:Employees can usually claim unfair dismissal only if they have worked for you for at least one year.
Rights to being given a written reasonIt is good practice for an employer to give reasons for dismissal. You are entitled to receive a written statement from your employer giving the reasons why you have been dismissed if you:- are an employee and have completed a year’s service with your employer
- are employed under a fixed-term contract which has expired and is not to be renewed
- were dismissed while pregnant or on maternity or adoption leave
