Thickness between glass (20mm is best by all accounts)
glazed internally or externally (internal more secure)
Stainless Steel fixings within window? (more secure)
Energy Rating and what sort of certificate you get
Also should be able to show you the amount of Gas loss in the unit, lower the better
What sort of warranty do you get?
Oh and give them a time limit or youll have them there for hours0 -
I would ask him how long he is going to stay. Anything beyond 40 minutes is positively invasive.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

Before he starts, tell him you only have a certain amount of time, or he'll be there all night. Tell him you are getting (have got) several quotes and say that you want his honest best price, as that is what you will compare to the others. Many of them faff about, 'phoning their boss'; suddenly discovering a special offer, deciding to do you a deal because its month end etc. I got very annoyed at one company who came down in price hugely (but took ages to do so) - why didn't they just offer that price in the first place?! (They were still a lot dearer than the firm I ended up using though.)0

Guy came round today , they are rehau tritec 60mm windows, getting 6 windows installed for £3300, that includes 3 upstair windows being reversible. Come with a 10yr guarantee,
are these decent windows or industry standard stuff ??
Sizes are roughly
1 bathroom window , 7ft x 4ft livingroom window , 4 at 4ft x 3ft ,
does this sound ok???0 -
I got Rehau windows in my extension
I needed the K type glass (reflects heat back into room).
The joiner installed them- the windows cost £250-£350 each to buy
for 6 windows I would suggest £1800 max and £400 for 2 man days labour
Get a local company in (I would suggest using a local joiner that is known to you / your friends)baldly going on...0 -
Internal or external beading?
Recycled or virgin plastic? (Recycled goes pink)
How many fixing screws?
Saw my neighbour's windows fitted, they cut the window sill to length by hand, resting it on a dustbin. The finishing strips were fitted using double sided tape (that's all, just the tape).
The company? I'll give you a clue - "ah said you buy one, you get one free - call NOW!"0 -

Sounds damn expensive to me. I've had my whole house done over the past few years with Rehau S706 profile (70mm rather than the 60mm you've been quoted) and it averaged £350 per window. What's the energy rating on the window?0 -

it tells you what things mean, then you can ask questions like you know what to expect!
sashmanBuying quality goods which last, should be an investment that saves money. :T
Buying cheap products which fail, wastes money and costs twice as much in the long run. :mad:0 -
Just had 26 windows and a double patio door for around £7,000 (ex VAT) hand made. Price didn't include fitting.0

1)What window system/profile do they use?
2) Do they have their own manufacturing facility?
3)How much? There should only be one price,no haggling/calls to boss and all that carp..
Do they have a showroom you could visit?
Will they send you a full quote with specs/diagrams/details of work?
Have a read here..

Incidentally, what have many upvc installers got against plastering? Instead, they glue white strips all over the place on the inside to hide gaps.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0
