Can someone please help with a problem that has now been going on for about 3 weeks. When I start my PC, I get the message "operating system not found" and I can only get in by using the restore CD.
My PC is just over 1 year old and this has happened before, when it was 6 months old. At that time Fujitsu Seimens replaced the hard drive under warranty. Now I am getting the problem again, they don't want to know as it is out of warranty (it started again 6 days after the warranty ran out).
How can I be absolutly sure it is the hard drive? everything works fine once I'm in, it's just getting in that's the problem.
I tried running chkdsk, and also fixmbr but this hasn't cured anything. I am a complete novice when it comes to computers so any help will be gratefully received.

I wouldn't say you are a complete novice if you managed to use chkdsk and fixmbr. Personally If you were worried about the HDD then I would try it in someone elses puter to see if it works on theirs. That will rule out every other bit of hardware on your machine if it works. If it still doesn't work then it is clearly limited to your HDD. You could try formatting as there is nothihng wouite like a "computer enema" once in a while for sorting out many problems.
if that doesn't work then grab a new HDD off of someone and thwhack it in yer case and start again. Or you could sell the whole thing to me for spares of repair £20
Have fun and quit worrying about computers coz it's too close to xmas.;);););)

It sounds like your HHD may be on its way out which is no big deal as you can pick up a new one for very little cost.
Have you tried changing which IDE channel it is using eg try using the cd drive cableIDE cable and see if the computer boots? (if it does then your motherboard may need changing)0 -
Did you do chkdsk c: /F/R
There are some HD diagnostics here, that should tell you if it is dying. (backup just in case)
