Shapewear

I have a wedding coming up in July which I'm a bridesmaid for, obviously I would love to look as good as I possibly could for it.
At the moment I'm a size 16 (I think?) and have no idea what 'shape' I am... would blob do? lol ;)

I've been looking into shapewear and even managed to order some!

http://www.simplybe.co.uk/shop/product/details/show.action?pdLpUid=HJ852&pdBoUid=3985&lpgUid=11148585#ReviewHeader

The above arrived today... i ordered the 16/18, I'm thinking its to big as it didn't hold me in, but I'm not sure it would hold me in much more in a smaller size.. just something about it.

Has anyone got personal experiences of shapewear and which is the best out there? Or some that actually works.

I'm not to honest about the price (even though I am a keen money saver), i just want to feel comfortable and confident about myself for once, and if this can help

    Hi Gemmy.

My experience of shapewear is more that is smoothes out the lumps and bumps rather than holding you in if you see what I mean. Then again, the stuff I have is pretty cheap (primark) so maybe others will be able to shed some more light on it.

If you "think" you are a 16, you might not be, have you compared your measurements to that on the sizing chart?

    Hi Gemmy

I've tried a few different ones. Best one I found was a La Dea all in one. Won't make you a size smaller but as cat says it smooths you out and makes the most of what you have. Not cheap but IMO worth every penny.

    Hope you enjoy your day

    Hi Gemmy

I too am size 16 and was bridesmaid last year. I bought a waist corset type thing as I would have had to take my dress off to go to the loo in any of the pant style ones. I got it from Simply Be (or another one of the JDWilliams websites) and it was well worth it :o)

    Enjoy being bridesmaid!
  • They take what is there and squish it a bit firmer and smoother, so your belly doesn't jiggle and the waistline of your clothes sits neatly rather than digging into soft belly bits. So clothes fit better in the same size, especially when you aren't that big to begin with - like you :)

If it wasn't just a little bit harder than putting on a brand new pair of tights, you bought a size or more too big.

M&S do the job, as do Evans for the larger ladies, who have more soft bits to squish.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

Spanx is often quite cheap on qvc

  • I have bought a couple of pieces of shapewear but find they tend to roll at the top when sitting down which turns into an uncomfortable experience and looks unsightly if wearing anything closer fitting.

I haven't tried spanx but as this seems to be the market leader can anyone say whether once it's on, does it stay in place with no roll down? Or any other recommendations?

I quite like the M&S shapewear. As everyone says it smooths out the lumps and bumps.
I tried Spanx but it worked a bit too well, I felt uncomfortable in it, especially as it was summer.
If you order Spanx from QVC you can take advantage of their no quibble 30 day return policy. Yes, you have to pay for P & P but you can try the Spanx on with your dress and even wear it for a couple of hours to see if you find it comfortable or not, which is what I did.
  • i'm bridesmaid in three weeks time and TK Maxx were selling the trinny and susanna tums and bums slimming g-string (I dont know the official name of it) Anyway retail it's £35 and i got mine for £5.50. Bargain! I think it's fabulous...gets rid of my post-baby belly bulge and smooths out the bumps from the sides. I highly recommend. Like an above poster said, these sorts of things really just smooth out your lumps and bumps.

I have found that shapewear is absolutely useless unless you are slim to start with, when I was a size 16/18 and tried it, I found that all that happened was it would smooth my waist and tummy but then would just accentuate bulges elsewhere like tops of thighs and above the top of the pants.

I think they're ideal if you are slimmer but still have a bit of a tummy or just want everything to feel a bit tighter under tighter fitting clothes so it gives you a smoother shape, but no good at all when you are larger to start with
